Marcel Lajos Breuer, a prominent German and American architect and designer, was born in Hungary to a family of Jewish descent. His life path led him as a young boy to Weimar, where he became a student at the famous Bauhaus School. This innovative school became a factor in modernist and functional design from the very beginning of its existence.

In 1925, Marcel Breuer took over the furniture workshop at the Bauhaus and began designing a folding chair, which became known as the B3 chair or, later, nicknamed “Wassily”. The inspiration for this project came from his daily cycling on an Adler machine. The result was the B3 model, presented in 1926 in Dessau.

The B3 chair is characterized by lightness, comfort and accessibility. The simple design, consisting of steel tubes and fabric or leather stretched between them, gives the impression that the seated person is floating in the air, like a hammock. This design was not only revolutionary, but also had a significant influence on furniture design and modernism in general.

The Wassily Chair – perfect and versatile

What makes the Wassily chair special is not only its design, but also the legend associated with its name. The famous artist and Bauhaus teacher, Wassily Kandinsky, asked Marcel Breuer, who had seen the process of creating the chair, to make one for himself. In response, Breuer agreed, and so the name “Wassily ” for this famous chair was born. However, the facts show that this beautiful story is not true.

Despite this, the Vasily chair has become an iconic piece of furniture, and since 1968, its production rights have been held by the American company Knoll. This was made possible by the personal friendship of Knoll’s founder, Hans Knoll, with Marcel Breuer himself.

Marcel Breuer has left an indelible mark not only on furniture design. His architectural projects, from houses in Wiesbaden and Zurich to the Museum of American Art in New York and the AT Tower skyscraper in Cleveland, have highlighted his talent and influence in the world of design and architecture. Trained at the Bauhaus, Marcel Breuer became one of the key figures of twentieth-century modernism, and his ideas continue to inspire in the twenty-first century.
