Eileen Gray (1878-1976) was an Irish-born creative genius who is recognized in the twentieth-century design world. Her unique pieces have become an integral part of modern art history, combining modernist aesthetics, comfort and aristocratic chic.

Childhood and Influence

Eileen was born in 1878 to a wealthy family in Ireland, where her upbringing reflected aristocratic taste. These experiences shaped not only her exquisite design style but also her independent character, free from the pursuit of fame and commercial success.

Initiator of Modernism

Beginning with Art Deco furniture, Eileen pioneered the Japanese lacquer technique and then utilized metal tubing ahead of its time. Experimenting with new materials, such as chrome plated tubes, allowed her to be ahead of many architects of her time.

Eileen Gray

Furniture Workshop

Unlike her contemporaries, Eileen did not follow the principle of ‘a house is a machine for living’. She believed that a house is a part of a person, his freedom and spiritual emanation. Each of her furniture models was created individually for a specific interior and person.

Exceptional Projects

After a conflict with Le Corbusier, Eileen built a new villa, Tempe à Pailla. Her activity was interrupted for a long period, but in 1954 she returned with the “Lou Perou” project.

Triumphant Return

In the 1970s, Eileen re-enters the world of design. In 1972 she is awarded the title “Royal Designer for Industry”. Retrospective exhibitions in the UK, Austria and the USA follow.

Legacy and Renaissance

After a long period of neglect, Eileen’s work became popular. In 1973 a collaboration began with Aram Zeev, who restored her unique objects.

The End of an Era

Eileen Gray passed away in 1976. Today, her designs live on: the originals are preserved in museums and ClassiCon produces sublicensed versions of them.

Popularity in the 21st Century

Her pieces, such as the Brick Screen and the dragon chair, have become auction items and break world records for value.

Eileen Gray is not just a designer, but an artist who has left an indelible mark on the history of design. Her unique perspective on space and materials continues to inspire new generations.

Adjustable Table E 1027

Adjustable Table E 1027 is perhaps the best embodiment of Eileen Gray’s twentieth century modernist classics. Its precise proportions, unique design and ability to adjust its height and carry the table like a bag by the handle ledge have made it a truly popular item in the design world.

This piece was a key moment in Eileen Gray’s evolution away from her fascination with Art Deco, ornamentation and precious woods towards the spirit of the industrial age. At that time she had already created the famous Brick screen, and her interest in abstract patterns was evident in her rug designs.

It is extremely interesting that all of Grey’s innovative ideas came to her alone, unlike what was common in her time. She didn’t create things for mass production; it was important to her to make her own and her loved ones’ lives more comfortable.

Versatility and ease of use were key criteria for Gray. She developed designs that could be easily assembled or moved. Eileen could easily change the ambiance of her home in an hour, move items around, or zone a space with storage systems.

One of the first designers to experiment with metal tubes in furniture was Eileen Gray. These tubes gave her pieces the properties she wanted. The first table, E 1027, was created from steel tubes and clear cellulose acetate in 1927. Originally designed for Sister Grey, it became height adjustable and was ideal for breakfast in bed and reading.

Its design is simple: a round base with a protruding tube where a second tube is inserted to support the table top. Moving the two parts changes the height, and a metal pin locks it in place.

Eileen Gray was deeply attached to her creations. The E 1027 table proved to be something special for her. When she began to show her work, she watched the public’s reaction with jealousy, but this table became especially dear to her.

Today, the E 1027 is manufactured by Classicon, retaining the dimensions and design conceived by Eileen Gray. The table is available in chrome and black base, as well as with clear or tinted glass. Its dimensions are a table top diameter of 52 cm and a table top height ranging from 55 cm to 93 cm.
